Police & Fire
MassDevelopment contracts with the Massachusetts State Police for Devens. The department includes one lieutenant, one sergeant, and ten troopers. Customary policing includes detecting, deterring, reporting and investigation of trespassing, theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities. The State Police also provide traffic enforcement, investigation of motor vehicle crashes, and response to emergency 911 calls.
Similar to other communities, Devens continues to be proactive to potential situations by reaching out and establishing rapport with the community, at-risk individuals and associated organizations. The Devens Fire Department protects the community with a team of 23 firefighters, two engines, one ladder truck, one rescue vehicle, and two forestry units. The department is trained in the latest techniques of fire fighting including emergency medical services, rescue, fire prevention, and inspection.

Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works is responsible for:
60 miles of road lanes
500 acres of improved landscape
Building maintenance of all MassDevelopment properties
Fleet maintenance of all MassDevelopment vehicles and equipment
Domestic and wildlife animal control
Cross connection surveying and testing
Solid waste and recycling
Animal Licenses
It is recommended that any animal owned or kept within the boundaries of Devens be registered and licensed. Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 149 as adopted by MassDevelopment requires that all dogs six months or older be registered and licensed annually on June 1st. Owner/keepers of dogs are given a thirty-day period ending on June 30th each year to register dogs. There is no mandatory requirement to register other animals, but any person may register and apply for a license of any type of animal legally-owned and kept within the boundaries of Devens. Owners and keepers of animals other than dogs are encouraged to register and license animals kept as pets.
Licensing Fees:
Male or female dogs - $7.00
Spayed/neutered dogs - $4.00
Other animals - $4.00
Late fee (mandated animals) - $15.00/month
Seeing-eye, hearing, or any assist dogs - no charge
Licensing Period: June 1 - May 31
Requirements:
Certificate of Rabies Vaccination by a licensed Veterinarian
Certificate or statement from a licensed Veterinarian that the dog has been spayed or neutered
Certificate from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind stating that the dog is trained to lead or serve a blind person (if applicable)
etter or certificate from the Massachusetts Office of Deafness stating that such a dog is trained to serve a deaf person (if applicable)
Yard Waste Disposal
Beginning the first Monday in April through November 30, the DPW will pick up yard waste in residential areas every Monday morning. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves and tree limbs. Yard waste must be placed at the curb in the front of the house with no trash or sand mixed in. Leaves and grass clippings must be packaged in biodegradable paper bags.
Christmas trees will be picked up the first two Mondays in January.

Wood Cutting Permits
Wood cutting permits are available for a $10.00 fee. Permits are valid for a fourteen-day period to residents for personal use only. Permits allow for the cutting of downed trees only in areas designated by the DPW.

Recycling Drop-Off
Recycling drop-off containers are in place for all Devens residents and businesses. They are located in the front parking lot of the DPW at 99 Buena Vista Street and are accessible at anytime for your convenience. The containers are marked and the following materials can be deposited:

Glass
Tin & aluminum cans
Mixed Paper which includes corrugated cardboard, computer printer paper, copier paper ( white or colored), envelopes (with or without windows), stationary, looseleaf paper (any color), folders (no metal or plastic tabs), brochures/pamphlets (coated/uncoated, stapled or folded), newspapers and magazines

Utilities
The Utilities Division provides electricity, natural gas, water and sewer services to the Devens community. It also provides pole and conduit access for telecommunications and cable television and antennae siting for wireless communications. The Utilities Division continues to pursue programs aimed at increasing energy supply, reliability and efficiency while limiting costs.
